Coronavirus: COVID vaccine side-effects that need immediate attention, as per the Centre
01/5These vaccine side effect need urgent medical attention
The novel coronavirus continues to impact our lives in many ways. With new emerging variants and the possibility of a third COVID wave, vaccination has become the need of the hour. Not only does it lower your chances of developing severe illnesses and risk of hospitalization, but it also curbs and contains the spread of the virus. However, due to vaccine side effects and the rise in the number of breakthroughs, the growing scepticism around COVID vaccines and it’s effectiveness has only increased and raised more concerns.
02/5Vaccine side effects are common, but harmless
Side effects from a coronavirus vaccination are common. As concerning and toll-taking as vaccine side effects may seem, it is harmless and diminishes over a period of a day or two.
Fever, chills, fatigue and pain at the injection site are some of the most prevalent side effects, which point to an immune response. However, there are people who are asymptomatic and develop no symptoms. This has left people more intrigued than ever and compelled them to ask several questions pertaining to whether or not COVID vaccine side effects determine the level of protection one has against the virus.
In addition, it should be understood that having side effects does not mean that you’re developing an infection. Instead it indicates that your body’s immune system has begun to recognize the foreign pathogen, or in case of COVID-19 vaccine, a fragment resembling the actual spike protein of SARs-COV-2 virus and started to produce antibodies to fight these viral particles.
These side effects are manageable and are most often not a matter of concern.
03/5When should you be concerned?
While vaccine side effects are not as serious or concerning as coronavirus infections, the Central government released a list of uncommon vaccine side effects that may need immediate attention. While fever, malaise, soreness in the arm continue to remain some of the most common but harmless post-vaccination symptoms, the Centre claims that if a person experiences any of the new symptoms, listed down by them, within 20 days of vaccination, then they will need critical attention and must visit a doctor immediately.
04/5Uncommon post-vaccination symptoms that demand immediate attention
As per the Centre, there are a list of new symptoms that may be experienced by people after their vaccination, which may be alarming and may call for immediate medical attention. Some of them are as follows.
– Shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing
– Chest pain
– Nausea, vomiting or constant pain in the abdominal area
– Pain in limbs or swelling in arms or feet
– Blurred vision
– Severe or persistent headache
– Weakness in any part of the body
– Scars at the site of injection
05/5Vaccine side effect vs. Coronavirus infection: What causes more damage?
As concerning as vaccine side effects may seem, experts believe that contracting COVID-19 can be more dangerous.
The rise in the number of Delta variant infections has not only lead to a surge in the number of COVID cases in and around the world, but breakthrough cases have also increased. That said, considering that the virus can even evade vaccine immunity, unvaccinated individuals remain to be at a greater risk. Those vaccinated are still at a lower risk of developing severe infections.
According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, unvaccinated individuals are over 10 times more likely to be hospitalized from COVID-19 and over 10 times more likely to die from it as compared to their vaccinated counterpart. This only makes it evident that vaccination is the only proper way to safeguard ourselves and the health of our loved ones from the deadly virus.
